Belacan Fried Rice

30 Apr

Belacan Fried Rice

It’s a Friday!!! So I’m sharing an easy peasy recipe to try over the weekend or even weekday. I’m slowly starting to cook during weekdays now (we usually eat at Chef Mom’s place most of the time!) although I must say it can get pretty tiring to cook after I get back from work (esp now that I”m pregnant).  To make things easier, I’ve assigned the work-from-home-husband the task of chopping up before I  leave work so it makes cooking a bit more easier :)

Ingredients

2 cups cold cooked rice

3 eggs

2 red chillies

4 shallots

4 cloves garlic

Cabbage

Long beans

Chicken fillet

 Seafood Tofu

Half  carrot

Handful of frozen peas

1 tbsp belacan paste (shrimp paste)

Seasoning (combine in a bowl):

2 tbsp oyster sauce

2 tbsp light soy sauce

1 tsp chicken stock granules

1 tsp pepper

1/2 tsp sugar

Method

In a wok, pour in eggs and fry until properly cooked. Dish out and put aside.

Add oil and saute the shallots, garlic and chillies. Fry until fragrant. Put in frozen peas and chicken and fry until color changes. Add in the chopped cabbage, carrots, seafood tofu and beans and fry for another 3 minutes. Add in the shrimp paste.   Stir in the rice and mix well. Put in the seasoning and add in a bit of water to make the rice moist. Fry until everyhing is mixed. Add in salt, pepper and more shrimp paste to suit your taste.

Dish out and EAT!  Want it spicy? No problemo – just add in some chili padi :)

Easy? You bet it is!

Impromptu Malacca Food Trip

Impromptu Malacca Food Trip

My husband, (the one that behaves like he’s pregnant sometimes) had some strong cravings for Malacca food. That’s when we decided to make an impromptu trip with my cousins in tow. It has been years since they’ve set foot in Malacca, I guess that’s maybe because they’re fortunate enough to explore Argentina and South Africa instead - lucky buggers!!!

The boys were happy to be in Malacca for a foodie trip.

We made our first stop for lunch @ Jonker Walk to savour chicken rice balls. Although they were a few other more famous stalls, the long queue and heat put us off. I don’t know how some people do it.

YUMMY

Nothing like a bowl of fatty cendol to wash it down with :D

We drove around to look for a hotel, and finally settled for this dingy RM68 a night room. We got what we paid for alright! The only advantage was the location, which was a 2 minute walking distance to the mall.

Then it was off for some Portuguese seafood dinner and from the picture you can see the excitment on their faces!

Devil’s Curry

Baked Fish

Kangkung Belacan

Fried Squid

Last but not least, sweet and sour crabs!!

Oh you know the food is good when he does this………

Total damage including fruit juices – RM115, cheap eh?!

This is the sheer look of happiness after he got his FIRST foot massage. Wait, more like from the fact how the masseuse was busy chatting him up for 1 hour!

The next day, before we left, we decided it would be Baba Nyonya food. We headed to Cottage Spice which is probably our third time there coz the food is that amazing.

CHICKEN RENDANG – can you sense my excitment?

Sambal Squid

All gone folks…..all gone!

Last but not least before we said our good-bye to Malacca food – a bowl of cendol, again!

Yup it’s pretty obvious that we love having a foodie trip in Malacca. Thinking of exploring food in Kuantan next!

The New Do

The New Do

Back when we dated my husband would get his haircut from a barber, resulting in him looking like he just got out of prison.  I couldn’t really make fun of it coz we were dating back then – had to maintain my miss nice image you see

After getting married, he slightly upgraded himself to a proper hair salon, albeit on most occasion -visiting different obscure ones. This time the cut wasn’t too short but it wasn’t that great either.

Recently, I persuaded him to give my stylist a shot. Although I realize paying RM68 for a man’s cut is definitely on the steep side, I was quite confident that Bill Tay of La Mode in Midvalley would give him a cut he’ll LOVE. And I was right!!! He managed to cover certain spots that my husband had concerns over. A lot of people don’t realize that he can VERY VERY vain sometimes and how I actually have to put up with it :p

I am vain but I love listening to my wife :)

My husband is officially a high end salon convert but it will probably be on a once every 3 months basis :)

I haven’t had my locks cut for more than 2 months and it had already grown rapidly due to my pregnancy hormones :)  One of my biggest concern these days is my lack of enthusiasm to get ready. I always dread washing, blowing and ironing my hair. It would take me at least 25 minutes just to achieve a decent look.  Hair alone. And I wash my hair twice a day due to my OCD nature of loving fresh and clean hair.

I was itching for a shorter do, which in my usual terms means 2 inches shorter. I’ve become SO confident in Bill that this time around, I didn’t eye him like a hawk. I let him have a go at it. It was only after the blow dry that I realized that it was MUCH shorter than what I expected.

I’ve had long hair for the past 7 years and the shortest I’ve ever gone in that 7 years was slightly above my bra line so this definitely was a shocker. Even the husband and sister said they’ve never seen me with such a do.

Before the hair cut: Long hair, below my bra line. And for the heck of it too – a before photo

After the hair cut: Shorter by at least 4 inches – all around shoulder length short with some layers in front!!

Look s a bit like Jen’s hair do in one of the Friends’ season right?

After the first wash the next day

I swear this is quite the preggers hair look and there are times this cut makes me feel  like a brown version of Snow White – a look I long abandoned after leaving school.

I”m still 50-50 on this one. I can’t say I love it alot but what I can confidently say is how my hair can get ready faster. Let’s not forget how much shampoo/conditioner and electricity saved at the same time :) My hair feels a whole lighter now and I reckon it’s just a matter of time before I start loving it. I do however wish to get it long in time for my shoot with Asther in end July/ early August :)

For some Bill Tay magic – you may set an appointment by calling 03-22835126.

His rates are RM68 for men and RM88 for women.

Reading Books Again

Reading Books Again

I’ve always read books growing up, mainly horror and non-fiction being on the top list. I remember how back then I would sit in my room and finish up one thick book in just a day!! I’d rent the books at Rent-A-Book in Bangsar because it’s economical that way

When I started going to college, my reading habits dwindled to zero. University text books don’t count right? It almost felt like I had a bunch of other important things to do than pick up a book to read.

After getting pregnant, somehow the reading habit or rather thirst to read crept in and I’ve been buying some books online. I got them for around RM25 as compared to RM40 from bookstores :) A good investment I say.

I’ve already finished If You Could See Me Now (by CeceliaAhern) and Hidden, written by such an awesome author – Cathy Glass. She is a foster carer in real and her books are based on the true stories of various kids she fostered.

I’ve completely fallen in love with her books so much that I went and got 2 other books written by her.

I’m currently reading Cut – every chapter prompts me to read the next, which explains why I sleep quite late these days!

My mom also got me this baby book which I’ve been religious reading. Obviously I am also thankful that my mom will be there helping me when the baby comes :D

Reading is probably the best thing to do on a weekend!

Meeting Aunty Mena

Meeting Aunty Mena

I guess blogging about the friends you miss somehow makes them feel bad and makes them take time off their busy schedule to see you again!!

That or maybe little threats of how the baby will never know who her Aunty Mena is worked *evil laugh*

Whatever it is, it was sooo good to meet my bestie again to catch up on things and gossip ;)

She even bought Peanut a bunch of cute baby clothes – all the way from the UK and it’s quite possibly Peanut’s first gift too. And yes Aunty, I will rename Peanut to something else once I find out the baby’s gender!!

PINK!

More pink!

These babies clothes are the cutest! It’s good to know that some people have faith that it will be a girl :D

Seriously, don’t wait for my baby to pop before we meet again and thank you so much for the lovely clothes. Time to start working on your own baby too :)

And quite random:

Just a quick note calling all dog lovers to keep a look out for MDDB’s adoption drive that usually take place in Summit once in two weeks or once a month in Subang Jaya. You may go and play with the dogs, while at the same time adopt if you want OR make a cash donation. MDDB also urgently needs rice, dry and canned puppy, dog food and puppy shampoo.
