Veggie Galore And Cutting A Toddler’s Hair

10 Feb

When it comes to cooking vegetables,  a bottle of oyster sauce is truly my best friend :D  I almost don’t know how to cook vegetables if I don’t have oyster sauce in it.

So the other day a little light bulb came on and I wondered if I could make green curry with egg tofu mixed with medley of vegetables. I’m a genius.

I boiled the vegs before hand to make it soft and did the usual to derive my green curry. Nothing to spicy coz my baby girl was gonna have this for lunch too and wala, here’s the end result:

She loved the curry with cauliflower to my surprise. And indeed this was a good change from the usual oyster-sauce-based vegetables :D  And green curry with chicken for that matter. For some reason she wasn’t a fan of the egg tofu but I read most kids don’t usually like it for some strange reason. No matter how much I tried to ‘hide’ the tofu with the cauliflower and rice, she’d eat everything else and spit out the tofu.

That’s when I found this other recipe for tofu. And it worked like a charm because that baby ate her damn tofu and even asked for more!

Using 1 pack of extra firm tofu, cut them into small cubes and pat dry. Season with some corn flour, salt, pepper and garlic salt. Fry in oil until brown and keep aside. Even if you want to stop at this stage, it’s no biggie coz it taste pretty delicious already! In a pan, chop 2 clove garlic, a small 1 inch piece of ginger and mix one tablespoon soy sauce with 1 tablespoon sesame oil. The recipe called for vinegar which I used but found it a tad salty (it went well with rice though, just a tiny bit salty on its own) so you may omit that. Throw in tofu to mix with sauce and this is the end result:

And I digress, here’s a photo of my soon to be 17 month old baby with her thick mop of hair taken during her dad’s b’day dinner. Looks like she has inherited my fast-growing-hair genes coz her hair seems to grow EXTREMELY fast, something which her father wish he could inherit, he he.

My future Doctor. Oh hai, I’m Dr Sairah – your doctor today. I really oughta prescribe you a slice of chocolate cake a day for nothing makes the heart and soul happier than a slice of rich chocolate cake. True story :D

It’s scary how some kids can be so vain….

And so good at mimicking their moms. She watches me put on makeup and now she knows how to pretend to apply lipgloss, put on eyeshadow and heck even blot her face with my oil blotter. The father keeps telling her she’ll never need all this coz she’s a natural beauty, unlike her mother :D

Moving on, I also made some Indian style potatoes to go with rice. I know right, carbs with carbs – don’t judge!

It was fairly simple and easy. I used 2 russet potatoes which I cut and boiled until soft. In a clean pan, dry roast cumin seeds (about 1 teaspoon, more wouldnt hurt!) until brown and aromatic. I used a spoon to smash it down further to form an almost powder form. Keep aside. Once the potato is boiled, mash it down with a fork. Heat pan, and fry 3 clove chopped garlic, half chopped onions and 1 chopped red chill. Add in a handful of cherry tomatoes (cut in half) and then add in potatoes and mix with some salt, pepper and roasted cumin. Garnish with spring onions.

Sinfully carbilious!

Both these two recipes are courtesy of this site I made slight changes to the recipe.

This is what the hubby brought to the table. Curry derived from a PASTE packet!! But he went on cooking and pretending like he was some chef  whipping out a new recipe. So annoying. More annoying when he went ‘mmm soo goood’ like as though he cooked this up from scratch. MEN!

And among all that food, this is a photo of Sairah after her hair cut  given by the most awesome hair-stylist – ME :D It’s becoming increasingly HARD to even cut her hair in an even manner coz she cries the minute any one of us touches her hair! It’s so hard to give her a straight even fringe thesedays.

Am not pleased with my side swept fringe woman!

This is what I have to say about mom cutting my hair!

Awesome tutu from BB Luvs Me online store, incase anyone is keen :D

YES I shall RUN away from that wicked witch the next time I see her coming at me with her scissors. I’ll run run as fast as I can and take me where my legs will take me to…..

Le sigh, any recommendations for a good kiddie hair dresser?

Hi there! Was wondering what shampoo do you use for your baby girl? We had to shave my daughter’s locks when she was almost 3 months… So the sad coz her hair now is not as soft and silky as at birth :(

    • TheMissusBlogs 10. Feb, 2012 at 3:34 pm #

Hiya! I’m using Johnsons baby shampoo for her. My ex classmate used it as a baby until school days and she had the most softest hair I”ve ever seen, lol. That’s one reason I was against that because I read somewhere that it makes the hair not so soft unlike at birth. Anyways, dont worry about that, try Johnsons and see, I usually blow dry her hair using cool air too to make it shine.

What to do? Born an Indian… Sure got lots of drama and tradition :) I use J&J as well for my baby girl… Let’s hope I don’t get blamed if she has to spend a lot of $$ to get the hair she wants… But in any event I’ll blame her daddy! :)

LOL. I actually was quite the rebel. MIL wanted it but I said nope, none of it. My parents didnt do that for me either so….plus I couldnt see the logic behind it. But dont worry la, she’ll grow up to have nice hair. Otherwise there’s always rebonding and a perm which I believe most of us rely on heavily, hehe.

I have learned from my mistake! So no more to my MIL traditions… And if she insists she will have to speak to me and get to me through her son… And have a list of things I’m bursting to say to her… :)

I think we all do. But yea, they need to realize that as new parents we should have the final say in OUR kids so we’ll do what we want to do. Dont understand why they want to push their tradition/beliefs, geez! I dont tell em how to live their lifes, so I expect them to do the same too.

Aww, Sairah’s expression after you cut her hair is priceless. It’s got “Do not approve” stamped all over it.

I’m so inspired by your cooking. I need to start cooking Thai food again instead of always getting Thai takeout (that tastes just so damn good). There’s this dish known as Nam Prik Pao and I would kill to know how to make it. It seems it contains this special black chilli sauce. It’s so delicious my plate is always clean.

I used to get my hair cut near SS4, its a hairstylist known as “Rasa Sayang”. It’s on the same street as the Thursday Pasar Malam for SS4. I think I was 14 years old and the aunty used to charge me RM8 for a haircut. Man, those were the days. She still cuts and colours my mother’s hair until today (and my niece’s too).

LOL tell me about it. But guess what, her fringe has already grown, in less than 2 weeks!!

Aww thanks, and likewise. I actually made that chow mein noodles after seeing it on your blog. I love Thai! Thai is actually easy to make. I love thai fried rice but somehow can never re-create it here :( I”m sure Mr Google can help you with the recipe :)

Rasa Sayang? Hehe sounds like a restaurant, I swear there was a restaurant by that name in Subang Parade a long time ago. Wow your mom must be a real loyal customer. I remember having BAD haircuts growing up, those were the times!

Hi Mummytoaprincess, I can SOOO relate to u. I’m a mom to a boy, and he had the silkiest, softest hair at about 6 months… And that’s when we had to shave it off!! I also felt his hair wasnt the same after that. It was coarser that previously, and i was so so sad… I tried baby oil, coconut oil (YES, even though he’s a boy, I wanted him to have nice hair) but it wasnt the same… Then slowly it changed again. Now even though its not as silky smooth as before, it has improved to when it was first growing back after the shaving. So, give your girl some time, i think it will eventually change back to silky soft and smooth…
Hi Shantini, I have cut Nikhil’s hair 3 times already, I took him to a simple saloon (in Ipoh though)…. They are very good with kids. Cant bear the thought of taking him to a barber n letting them use the electric shaver on him!! Anyway just look out if any saloons do cut for kids. They just need patience and experience in knowing when to move the scissors away when the kid moves their head.. Good luck!

    • TheMissusBlogs 13. Feb, 2012 at 9:37 am #

Dhee, ah yes, coconut oil, my mom actually did put some on Sairah’s hair back when she had little hair. Infact growing up, I used to apply coconut oil to my hair and now I have this mop of a hair to answer to! But you’re right, it will eventually become smooth and silk over time.

OH god, no please no barber hair cuts on him! They only know how to use the electric shave and give everyone the SAME look! A Cut Above has cuts for toddlers but I memang anti them after they gave me a horrible cut once so will look around and see. I know it’s not gonna be easy esp since she’s so wary of her hair!

Thank you Dhee… Actually she caught the flu from me n has blocked nose now… So my mum suggested the coal with the asap treatment… Usually done for newborns, to dry their hair n keep their body warm… Surprisingly that is making her hair all shiny n soft :)

  6. D 13. Feb, 2012 at 2:35 pm #

Hey thanks for the suggestion! My boy has been having flu off and on for sometime now… His nose is wet (and it doesnt help when he simply cries for the most nonsense of reasons!). Have already taken him off the meds cos, how long can u give meds… Maybe will try this if his nose is blocked again.
BTW, I use Baby Sterimar, a seawater spray for his nose when it is blocked. Not easy spraying him but it helps to unblock and he can sleep better….

    • TheMissusBlogs 13. Feb, 2012 at 3:10 pm #

D, Baby Sterimar just brought back memories. Bet you got it from Dr Angeline, lol. I agree, it’s SOOOO damn tough using that on a kid, no matter how I try to ‘trick’ her she wont let me insert that thing into her nose. Once or twice, I’ve accidently sprayed her face and eyes with it!!

Actually using the same method, my mom used to put hot water in a big bowl, drop some vicks into it and use a towel to cover my head and get me to breathe in the smoke. It definitely unblocks the nose.

Hope Nikhil gets well soon. Awful weather we’re having that’s why.

  7. D 14. Feb, 2012 at 10:21 am #

Nikhil first got the Baby Sterimar when still small while in Ipoh. And yes Dr Angelina is a big fan of it :-) It does help to clear a block though since they dont know how to blow their nose! We get Nikhil to hold the spray and then “spray” us… Of coz now he knows we are bluffing cos we say “bzzzzzzz” ala spraying sound, and now he immitates us :-)

    • TheMissusBlogs 14. Feb, 2012 at 1:36 pm #

It works? I wouldnt know coz Sairah wont let us use it on her, lol. That’s a cute way of getting him to spray it himself, lol. Hahaha too cute la! Kids pick up things so fast thesedays.

      • Mummytoaprincess 14. Feb, 2012 at 2:56 pm #

We use the same spray for my baby… She is still too young to put up a strong fight back :) So At the moment all we do is to hold her hands, legs n face before we spray it into her nose… And trust me I get the ‘I hate you look’ from her each time….
