Her First Solid
5 Apr
Baby Sairah started her solids one day before she turned 6 months about 3 weeks ago. It was on a Sunday when she had her first meal (technically she turned 6 months on Monday but I wanted to be the FIRST to feed her, coz I’m calculative like that).
I had A LOT of advices and nags from people urging me to start her solids earlier, some advised as early as 4 months!! She will sleep better with a full tummy apparently, why are you starving her, she’s a growing child she needs solids, you’re doing it wrong, you’re a horrible mother (okay I just made that one up but who knows what is being said behind my back hmmm) yada yada yada, but end of the day, I’m GLAD I waited it out and followed what her pediatrician said. Maybe I’m just a sucker for rules but I really believe that a ped is a ped for a reason (years of studying and years of experience hello.) Babies today are not like babies of years ago, and given Sairah’s colic phase during her first-two months, I wanted to make sure we thread very very carefully when it comes to her.
Deep down I knew her little tummy and digestive system would not be ready for solids at an early stage so thanks for all the advices, but no thanks, really :D I will do what I think is right for MY baby. And I’ve realized this husband of mine can be influenced easily (damn lalang never use brains sometimes) but luckily I always straighten him out before it gets worse
Anyho, we were all eager that day, all ready to fill up her pink lil plate with my baby’s first solids and see her reaction but then as dinner time approached, the little one just decided to sleep! For an hour or so. So we just waited and waited, and I was ever ready to run into the kitchen the minute she wakes up as she usually demands her meals immediately.
30 mins passed by, still asleep, 45 mins passed by, still asleep, and this baby is usually not known to nap this long!! And then she finally wakes up from her slumber looking very much in the daze. It didn’t help that we had everyone circling around her cheering her on, lol.
The bland bland rice cereal with apple. Been hunting high and lo for Heinz rice cereal (highly recommend by her baby doctor but a real bitch to find but for the sake of my baby so help me god I will hunt it down till I get it) so we settled for Gerber, bought from the supermarket in Empire Mall. Also a very good brand to consider.
Excuse her bed-head look, lol, I know I should have at least combed her hair but I was more concerned (and nervous) about feeding her. I’m a horrible mother, haha
Sairah being extremely cautious, hmm what the heck are you shoving in mah mouth?
OH GOD, it’s sooo bland!
Guess I”ll eat it anyway coz I’m hungry!
Good god here comes more!
HELP pls, this is tortuous!
Okay think I’m slowllyyy getting the hang of this.
Eww.
Even daddy got a taste of her food
So that was her first time. She even cried a little towards the end, guess it was all very overwhelming for her, lol. It’s been almost a month since her first solid and she just LOVES it now. Feeding her is EXTREMELY easy I have to admit it. Dont have to do no flying aeroplane motion to cox her to eat, she gulps it down easily and happily. We’ve just increased her meal to twice a day now with apple juice in between too. Exciting exciting.
And to think next Thursday my precious will all of 7 months!! Goodness, where is all that time going to?
My baby girl in her love-me mode

A. I think u should blog more often — i love reading your blog and always eagerly await a new post
B. Been waiting for this post hahah!! Dont blame u for wanting to be the 1st to feed Sairah her semi solids. I’ll be the same!! So, gotta wait for weekend to start for Nikhil…. BTW, i called up Heinz distributor here, and they said the product has been discontinued!!! I asked Nikhil’s paed and she recommended Gerber. Now, have to go on a hunt for Gerber, sigh…. Dont think i have ever hunted like this for anything for myself!! Ended up asking my fren in UK if they have Heinz and Gerbers Rice Cereal there. Around here I see varieties for older babies, not plain rice cereal for 6-month old. Anyway i bought the damn banana cereal in the red box already to give him later, hahaha!!
And yes i agree on waiting til 6 months to feed baby semi solids. U know, after 4 months many asked me also why i havent started semi solids, why not put nestum into his night milk so that he’s full and sleep longer, etc etc etc… Not worth it. Its just another 2 months to wait, right? My fren fed her son Rusk at 4+ months, he developed an allergy and started throwing up blood! Just so not worth it! Anyway glad Sairah loves her food now. Its really exciting times… But super scary how fast time flies and how fast they grow. Everyone tells me that pretty soon I’m gonna be celebrating Nikhil’s 1st bday!
Eh, i really wrote grandma stories here lah, sorry………
Aww thanks for the support babe. Felt guilty for not updating my blog but I’ve been busy with stuff past few days. Promise to write more, hehe.
Hahaha yea I was thinking of you as I blogged about her first solids, hehehe. Discontinued?? NOOOO!!! No wonder it’s been so hard to find it!! Gerber is defintiely the next choice, go get it from the supermarket in Empire Mall. But careful of the expiry date. Haha I also got the banana one, seems like that’s the only one available but I was told to hold off the bananas until they’re 7-8 months or so? Do you know anyone in SG? Heard that’s the best place to get it. Im seriously thinking of shipping it from the US at the same time.
Trust me, it’s very irritating when ppl go on about feeding the baby earlier. Btw nestum or nestle cerelac for that matter is not good for the baby, too much sugar and my ped has adviced me against it. The secretary was telling me how her MIL coaxed her into feeding her 3 month old some nestum, she had no choice but to give in, and when she did, that night the baby cried and cried and did not sleep at all. Had a bloated tummy too. Was scary just listening to it. And obviously her husband kena kau kau from her, haha. So you’re definitely doing the right thing by waiting it out. Slow and steady la
Btw when Nikhil starts on his solids, it’s going to be exicting for sure, from watching his reacion, to seeing his appetite increase day by day, exciting exciting!
LOL i know, before you know it they’ll be 1 year old. Start planning his birthday!
Seriously, can get it in SG? Hmmmm I have a fren there and another fren who’s going there in 2 weeks’ time for work… So maybe i can ask them to look out for it? When i was hunting “online” (read: google) reg Heinz, came across some SG forums where they were asking where to get Heinz, i thot they facing same prob as us… Anyway if i can get my hands on ‘em, will certainly get extra for Sairah too.
If I’m not mistaken, that is what my friend said. Then again, maybe they discontinued it there too? Gerber most definitely can get there (and I’m talking about just plain rice cereal, no apple mix, can’t seem to find the plain one in Empire coz I want to add my own fresh pureed veges. Okay same here, will get it for you if I can find it *fingers crossed*
the know-it-alls will say start giving fish at 5 months, start putting nestum in the milk at 2 months (u read it right, no typo) but at the end of the day, we are the decision makers!
I decided to feed Sanju his first solid a week earlier because same as you, i wanted to be the one to feed him first and also have some time to monitor his reaction… and the week after he was slated for vaccination, didnt want 2 new things to happen in one weekend.. so… cheated a bit
feeding Sairah is easy? dont speak too soon, babies will be babies, they have their moods as far as food is concerned. The macho boy Sanju apparently refused to eat bfast yday, and ate like a sparrow at dinner…
the heinz cereals are really short in stock, so i just buy buy whatever i can get my hands on… check them out at the baby fair or pureen warehouse sales… i get the apple muesli & banana one for his breakfast even now.. nutritious and easy peasy for my babysitter…
EXACTLY! A colleague was telling me how she feeds her 2 month old grandson porridge! I was shocked! Felt like telling them, yes I can feed her at an early stage, but if she has any tummy discomfort and stays up at night with a bloated tummy, are you going to help me and my mom take care of her??
You did the right thing coz vaccinations are always scary since they end up with a fever and can be fussy the whole day.
Really? Okay for now then she’s pretty easy. Not sure how she will be later but hope it will still be easy, hehe.
Hunting for this Heinz rice cereal is really a difficult task. If really no choice then we’ll stick with Gerber or try to get a family friend to bring it back from SG.
I think gerber’s should work fine too, as long as no added sugar contents. Been hearing jaya grocer at empire subang is so good for baby food, but i havent got the chance to visit although its close to work
As adviced by her ped – first choice is Heinz, then Gerber. I got her first box of gerber from jaya grocer in Empire. They have a small selection la, not that great, but much better than most places. You should check it out.
Aikksss! The bunny ears are so cute – please have her wear those when we meet next.
Also, where’s the long lost reply email??
Aunty. Bunny ears is for home use or unless you planning on throwing a costume party soon
Bila jumpa?
Oops sorry, lupa, email you soon, lots of new developments, ahem
don’t worry baby knows the best for themselves as far as foods are concerned……
Hahaha but Eugene, the mommy has to buy and find the best food for her baby
Blink, blink, blink..times files and Sairah is now 6 months old. Its time to throw the bottle away. Ha ha…
Tell me about it, she’ll turn 1 in one time. LOL jess, she still drinks milk at least 3 times a day
yay! how’s she liking her food? so cute Sairah! Your mummy has to post more pics of you!
Hey AZ, she LOVES it
Hahaha thanks, her mommie will post up more pics for sure.
That pic of her in the manja mode is soooo melt-inducing. And I soooooo know what you mean about the uhm…lalang :P :P Sometimes I wish I had me a lawnmower LOL.
This baby of mine is really a manja queen la. Lawnmower, LOL good one! Really am starting to think alot of men are like that, can be easily convinced otherwise, sheesh!
She is so cute. What brand of baby oatmeal that you buy for her?
