Borneo Adventure @ Mount Kinabalu

28 Jul

It was Day 2 when we decided to rent a car to make our way to Mount Kinabalu with our RM140 a day rented Proton Saga (and that’s without petrol ok, lol).

Holding a map in my hand, assuming the navigator role for the day with the other half being the driver, we were all set to have the most scenic drive ever experienced on our local soil.

With bright blue skies and plush greeneries, our Saga made its way from one town to the next in search for Kinabalu National Park (because that’s where Mount Kinabalu is, in case you didn’t already know).

Breakfast in Tuaran

From Penampang to the tiny town of Tuaran to Kota Belud (where the Bajau folks are predominately from), this was a much longer ride because we trusted this guy from India (of all people)who told us to go through Kota Belud when we could have taken the short cut via Tamparuri to get to our destination.

But never mind, it all turned out to our benefit because the scenery via Kota Belud was absolutely g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s.

Once you’re in Kota Belud town itself, you will be able to spot the peak of Mount Kinabalu!! The air was fresh, the weather was cool AND out of no where, the sight of a river with crystal clear water flowing from the earth greeted us. Magical sight!

Can you spot the peak? Can you?

Sadly I wasn’t able to capture the sight of that river from our moving car :( But no doubt that God’s creation will be sketched right up here in my head.

After a 2.5 hours long windy road ride, we were finally there…

Fun Fact: The Kinbalu Park actually covers a staggering 754 sq km and is much bigger than Singapore Island!!

Almost making it up to the top…….NOT.

So I lied, we didn’t get a chance to conquer Mount Kinabalu because it would take a whole 2 days to reach the top AND one would have to be in good shape to climb up. Which at this point, none of us are. Hubby however is quite determine to climb next year so a trip back here is definitely on the list.

And even though some might laugh at us for not climbing (esp you Dheeraj!) fun fact for you – 80% of visitors dont’ climb all the way to the peak, they instead simply enjoy the serenity of the place, like we did :)

We also explored the various trails around the Park.

Decided to go to this lovely resort for lunch while looking at the beauty of the mountain

One last look taking it allllll in at this before we made our way back to town.

Honestly these pictures do NO justice to the real thing. Nothing beats being present there to witness the beauty of Mount Kinabalu and its surroundings.

Now we have this scene to look forward to next year.
